Today at sunset the Jewish community will celebrate Hanukkah, a rabbinically declared holiday, also known as the Festival of the Lights. This holiday is the reminder of the miraculous victory over the Syrian-Greeks who seized the land and the temple. They significantly outnumbered the Jews and exceeded them in munitions and equipment but, with God on their side, the Jews prevailed.
After the battle, the people of God cleared the temples of all the unholy items. In their process of re-dedication of the temple, they searched for oil to light the candlestick/lampstand (menorah). Only one cruse of oil, enough for one day, was found with the seal of the High Priest signifying its purity. Since the priests, who were the only ones able to make more oil (Ex 30:25), were in battle they were disqualified from making any more oil until they could consecrate themselves (Ex 29:35-37). Now the command of the Lord for the lampstand required that it burn always, so one cruse was not enough.
Exodus 27:20 And thou shalt command the children of Israel, that they bring thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamp to burn always.
Nonetheless they lit the lampstand wicks and miraculously the wicks burned for eight days allowing the Maccabees sufficient time for their seven day consecration as well as one full day to prepare the oil.
In studying the Bible we know that oil symbolizes the Holy Spirit. Without the Him we have no light (Gen 1:2-3) and with Him, there is no darkness(John 14:26). As we continue our study in Hebrews, our goal is to understand our new covenant and our relationship with the Holy Spirit impacts that understanding. We must learn of the Holy Spirit be taught by Him, and receive His revelation so that the things eye has not seen, nor ear heard neither having entered into the hearts of man, the things which God has prepared for them that love Him (1 Cor 2: 9-10) – those things, our new covenant blessings, become our manifested reality!!! Are you willing to just light your lampstand and allow the supernatural light of the Holy Spirit to burn always? Let’s light it together!
