Valentine’s Day is our modern day celebration of love; however, given its brutal beginnings, the concept of actual love is grossly distorted and sorely missing. Let’s venture over to true love. God is love. That’s very comforting, but given that God is not a man (1 Sam 15:29) but a Spirit (John 4:24), how can we begin to comprehend or even receive such a love? 1 Cor 2:14 states that “…the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: … neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” In Eph 3:19 from both the NLT and the NIV, the affirmation is that experiencing Christ’s love surpasses knowledge. So how do we receive this love, and more to the point today, how do we return this love?
Paul wrote to the church at Corinth that: “Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love” 1 Cor 13:13 NLT. Love is important and it is crucial that we understand and know God’s love. The book of 1st John will prove an indispensable agent to unfold the revelation of God’s love.
